There’s nothing better during the winter than curling up with a warm mug of tea. And with the illnesses, headaches, and colds that are more common during cold weather, the right recipe for a warming winter herbal tea can do more than just provide warmth.

Herbal teas have long been used in natural medicine to support immunity and to fight against common ailments and illnesses, particularly the type that tends to accompany the winter months.

So try these warming winter herbal tea recipes at home this winter, whether you’re just looking for a warm pick me up in the morning, as a soothing nightcap before bed, or to utilize the many potential health benefits of the herbs in these recipes.

Ginger Herbal Tea

Ginger is an important spice not just in the kitchen but also in natural medicine. It has been used for centuries for its potential to support a range of ailments, so it just so happens to be one of the most common warming herbs. Ginger’s thermogenic properties help keep you warm, but it also may aid in supporting digestion, settling abdominal comfort, providing temporary relief from nausea, and helping to ease feelings of discomfort due to seasonal problems related to colds, the flu, headaches, and menstruation pains.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger root.
  • 1-1/2 teaspoon honey.
  • Two cloves.
  • 1-inch piece of cinnamon bark.
  • 3-inch strip of orange peel.

Directions

  1. Bring 8 ounces of water to a boil.
  2. Add all ingredients.
  3. Bring the heat down to low, and let the mixture steep on the stove for approximately 15 minutes.
  4. Strain and enjoy!

Ashwagandha Tea

Ashwagandha is one of the most commonly used and important herbs in Ayurvedic medicine. Because of its adaptogenic properties, it works to improve the body’s ability to fight against disease and illness. It also provides “multiple pharmacological actions such as antistress, neuroprotective, antitumor, anti-arthritic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory.”

The best part is that making ashwagandha herbal tea couldn’t be simpler.

Ingredients

  • 5-inch piece of dried Ashwagandha root.
  • 1 teaspoon honey.

Directions

  • Wash and boil the root in a cup of water. Let the root boil for about 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Strain into your favorite mug, stir in your honey or preferred sweetener, and enjoy!

Lemon and Black Pepper Tea

Along with being an excellent source of vitamin C, lemons also provide antioxidants, support for the immune system, and a healthy response to microbial challenges. When combined with black pepper, you may find this tea offer amazing outcomes!

Ingredients

  • Juice of one lemon.
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder.
  • ¼  teaspoon black pepper.
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons honey.

Directions

  • Boil 8 ounces of water.
  • While the water is coming to a boil, place the pepper and turmeric in your mug.
  • Once the water comes to a boil, pour it into the mug.
  • Stir in lemon juice and honey, and enjoy!
