Learn which foods cause heartburn and how to manage the symptoms.

Heartburn is uncomfortable, it can keep you up at night, and the reason behind the pain isn’t always easy to pinpoint. Treating heartburn is equal parts identifying what causes it and finding symptom relief. Which foods commonly cause heartburn? What are some natural and effective treatments? Keep reading to learn more about heartburn.

What Causes Heartburn?

Heartburn, or acid reflux, happens when stomach acid makes its way back up the esophagus, causing a warm, burning, uncomfortable sensation. Here are a few reasons heartburn happens:

Diet

You may have noticed a correlation between the foods you eat and the onset of heartburn. For example, onions may cause a night of discomfort for you, while your roommate is fine. Occasional heartburn is normal, and happens to a lot of people.

Greasy foods and large meals are often the culprit, so start by trying smaller, learner portions. Other common foods that trigger heartburn include spicy foods, alcohol, tomatoes, citrus fruit, peppermint, caffeine, onions, and chocolate.

Next time you experience the pains of heartburn, make a note of what you most recently ate to learn more about your personal reflux triggers.

Eating Before Bed

Eating before lying down is a common trigger for heartburn. When your stomach is full at bedtime, acid and food can make their way back up into your esophagus, causing that burning sensation. The best solution is to avoid eating before bed and eliminate post-dinner snacking.

Pregnancy

Pregnant women often suffer from heartburn because the hormones involved in relaxing the body for childbirth, also relax the valve that keeps acid out of the esophagus. Thankfully many of the medications and supplements that treat heartburn are safe for use during pregnancy.

GERD

Those who suffer with chronic heartburn, more than twice a week, may suffer from GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. GERD can affect people of all ages, but often correlates with smoking, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle.

GERD can often be controlled through diet and lifestyle changes. Consider starting a food journal to gain a better understanding of what is causing your reflux and talk to your healthcare team for further guidance.

Natural Heartburn Remedies

Foods like ginger, fennel, aloe and parsley can naturally relieve the symptoms of heartburn. You may also want to keep these supplements on hand to keep digestive discomfort at bay.

Heartburn Advantage from Integrative Therapeutics

The clinically-studied ingredients in Heartburn Advantage from Integrative Therapeutics have been shown to support gastrointestinal tissue health and gastric function. This product may help reduce occasional heartburn, upset stomach, bloating, and nausea.

Heartburn Stop by Renew Life

Renew Life combines beneficial herbs, minerals and digestive enzymes to make its Heartburn Stop supplement. The ingredients in this soothing product are designed to work internally in the esophagus and stomach to help you feel comfortable after eating trigger foods.

Heartburn Relief from Enzymedica

Looking for fast relief from occasional heartburn? Heartburn Relief from Enzymedica uses an innovative alginate formula which creates a “raft” of gel that sits on top of the “acid pocket” of the stomach, blocking the stomach contents from entering the esophagus.

Heartburn Essentials from Pure Encapsulations

Heartburn Essentials from Pure Encapsulations is designed to maintain healthy gastric secretion even in occasionally stressful conditions. The blend of gamma oryzanol, marshmallow, artichoke, turmeric, and slippery elm may help enhance digestion and soothe the digestive tract. Which foods cause you heartburn?
